The Wolf Within

“The wolves are out there; denial has no survival value”

Wolves across cultures

Legends of humans turning into wolves appear in many places, including Norway, Iceland, Portugal, England, Germany, Romania, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ireland, and the USA.

The author recalls the classic film The Wolf Man and its line about walking through thorns “through no fault of your own.”

The author’s belief is that almost every human has a bit of wolf in them, and that when control is lost, the result can be a serial killer or mass murderer.

The term “lone wolf” is used for terrorists, the Marine Corps once used “the Pack” in recruiting, and Hitler and German submarine groups were given wolf names.

Wolves and their hunting

Wolves are described as killing machines that can run long distances and leap 16 feet in one bound.

Packs isolate their target from the herd.

A wolf’s bite can exert about 400 pounds per square inch.

The author describes watching a wolf pack kill a moose in Alaska while he was in an Army helicopter.

Predators and the night

Animal wolves and human predators both hunt at night.

The author cites Mass General Research Institute researchers who say the human brain is not meant to be awake after midnight, and that staying out late leads to impulsive, high-risk behavior.

He warns that people alone at night are prey.

Practical advice

Stay with your group. Don’t take an Uber alone, and if you drive for Uber, pay attention to your passengers.

Don’t walk alone at night, and avoid getting into a vehicle with a stranger.

Carry a concealed firearm if you must go out at night.

Practice engaging multiple targets in your lane, and practice rapid follow-up shots.

Avoid paralysis by analysis. Trust your intuition.

Look people in the eye, because sometimes you can sense the wolf.

Don’t rely on folk remedies: garlic and silver bullets won’t stop a wolf.

Denial and action

Wolves are increasing in number, and attacks are showing up on social media, including attacks involving women and people who don’t look dangerous.

Attacks have been reported at Disneyland, on cruise ships, and at an East Peoria Walmart.

The closing line: “Even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers by night” is going to need a gun.
